Bank Moats in India: All 26 Banks Scored

No Indian bank has a wide moat. Across every listed Indian bank scored on MoatSCORE 6.0, the highest score is ICICI Bank at 6.05, and every one of them classifies NARROW. The deposit franchise is real and it is the moat — but UPI has capped what that franchise can charge for, and the framework prices that ceiling in.

How to read this page. Every score below is produced by MoatSCORE 6.0 from verified filing evidence — seven scored dimensions, hard gates that cap weak moats, and a rule that outcomes may never prove mechanisms. Most rows are provisional first-pass reads; 5 companies have a full deep-dive teardown. Scores are dated and subject to revision. Nothing here is a buy or sell call.

Where the moat actually sits

Averaged across all 26 banks companies, the strongest dimension is Cost Advantage (6.09) and the weakest is Efficient Scale (5.56). That ordering is the whole banking argument in two numbers: what a bank owns is the relationship and the switching friction, not a cost edge it can defend. Leverage is not a moat — a bank that earns its spread by borrowing more is not more durable, only more exposed.

Coverage shows how many companies had enough evidence to score that dimension. A dimension scored for only a handful of companies is a thin signal, not a sector verdict.

What separates the top three

ICICI (6.05), HDFC Bank (6.04) and Kotak Mahindra (6.03) are separated by two hundredths of a point — which is to say they are not separated at all. Treat them as one band. What puts all three at the top of the table is the same thing: a low-cost deposit base that funds itself, and a customer who does not move. What keeps all three out of the wide band is also the same thing: UPI made payments free, and free payments strip the pricing power a current account used to carry.

The banking scores use a sector-specific rule: economic profit is measured as (ROE − cost of equity) × book equity. A bank cannot score for a moat it has merely levered into.

Method and limits

Scores come from MoatSCORE 6.0, applied to filings, annual reports and earnings-call transcripts. Two independent runs on the same evidence must land within half a point. Where we find no evidence for a claimed moat, we record that as a finding rather than a gap. The full cross-sector table is on the Moat Screener.
