Paint Company Moats in India: All 8 Scored

Paints is the highest-scoring consumer sector we cover, and the one under live attack. Asian Paints leads at 6.83 and Berger follows at 6.42 — both NARROW, both gate-capped. What makes this sector worth watching is that the moat thesis is being tested in public right now, by two funded entrants who have said in filings exactly what they intend to do.

How to read this page. Every score below is produced by MoatSCORE 6.0 from verified filing evidence — seven scored dimensions, hard gates that cap weak moats, and a rule that outcomes may never prove mechanisms. Most rows are provisional first-pass reads; 5 companies have a full deep-dive teardown. Scores are dated and subject to revision. Nothing here is a buy or sell call.

Where the moat actually sits

Averaged across all 8 paints companies, the strongest dimension is Intangible Assets (6.28) and the weakest is Counter-Positioning (4.50). Read that against the price war: the sector's edge is brand and distribution, not customer lock-in. Switching costs are the weakest real dimension here, which is precisely why a well-funded entrant with a century-old parent brand could claim third place in two years.

D3 Cost Advantage5.698/8

D2 Switching Costs5.068/8
D7 Counter-Positioning4.501/8

Coverage shows how many companies had enough evidence to score that dimension. A dimension scored for only a handful of companies is a thin signal, not a sector verdict.

The war, in the players' own filings

Asian Paints has declined to state a market-share number for two consecutive quarters. Berger claims share "in excess of 20%" among listed paint companies. Birla Opus claims it is now India's third-largest decorative brand by revenue. JSW's chairman called himself fourth — and named the Birla Group, not the incumbents, as the real threat. Four claims, no contradictions, one silence.

Method and limits

Scores come from MoatSCORE 6.0, applied to filings, annual reports and earnings-call transcripts. Two independent runs on the same evidence must land within half a point. Where we find no evidence for a claimed moat, we record that as a finding rather than a gap. The full cross-sector table is on the Moat Screener.
