Pharma Moats in India: All 48 Companies Scored
Pharma is the largest sector we cover and among the lowest-scoring. Across every listed Indian pharmaceutical company we score, the average MoatSCORE sits below the all-company average and the top score is 5.86. Scale is abundant in this sector. Durability is not — and the filings explain why in the companies' own words.
Where the moat actually sits
Averaged across all 48 pharma companies, the strongest dimension is Cost Advantage (5.76) and the weakest is Switching Costs (4.99). The structural problem is visible in the spread: whatever edge exists sits in process and cost, not in the ability to hold price. Generic pharmaceutical pricing erodes by design, and management teams say so on the record.
| Dimension | Sector average | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| D3 Cost Advantage | 5.76 | 48/48 |
| D1 Network Effects | 5.47 | 48/48 |
| D5 Intangible Assets | 5.45 | 48/48 |
| D4 Price Discretion | 5.41 | 48/48 |
| D6 Efficient Scale | 5.27 | 48/48 |
| D2 Switching Costs | 4.99 | 48/48 |
Coverage shows how many companies had enough evidence to score that dimension. A dimension scored for only a handful of companies is a thin signal, not a sector verdict.

The number management gives you
One Q1 FY27 earnings call put the sector's economics more plainly than any analysis could: commodity APIs face price erosion of around 95%, while high-potency and oncology products erode "at least 50%-60%." Both numbers describe erosion. The moat question in Indian pharma is not whether prices fall — it is whether a company has built something that makes them fall more slowly than a competitor's, and whether the filings prove it rather than assert it.

Method and limits
Scores come from MoatSCORE 6.0, applied to filings, annual reports and earnings-call transcripts. Two independent runs on the same evidence must land within half a point. Where we find no evidence for a claimed moat, we record that as a finding rather than a gap. The full cross-sector table is on the Moat Screener.
